Half time in the Chelsea Wolves game this afternoon saw no substitutions from Thomas Tuchel – but it did see one interesting tactical trick used by the coach.
He switch Reece James from right wing back to right centre back, with Cesar Azpilicueta going the other way. It was in direct response to the Wolves threat down their left side, which was getting in behind James and isolating Azpilicueta.
It’s already working wonders – James is now tight to the Wolves wingers with the pace to match them.
It’s a trick that Tuchel has used many times before, and in fact he’s started many games with this setup too. The fact that both players are versatile enough to play in each position – while each having totally different skillsets – makes it a great card for the coach to have up his sleeve.
It’s also another good reason why losing Azpi this summer would be a big bow for Tuchel and the whole team.
