As a doctoral researcher within SmallData, you will:

• work on a research project in the research group of a respective principal investigator
• benefit from a qualification program that is tailored to the research topics of SmallData
• carry out collaborative interdisciplinary research through the given network structure between projects and the possibility for lab visits

Admission criteria

We expect you to:

Have or be close to a master’s degree in a relevant field such as computer science, (bio)statistics, mathematics, physics, engineering, life sciences, or other related disciplines. Graduate transcripts from foreign universities must be accepted by the admissions office.

• Have a strong interest in the research topics of SmallData, specifically in working in interdisciplinary projects, and to indicate why you are a good fit for the program.
• Meet the respective project-specific requirements

• Have a very good command of written and spoken English.

Preference will be given to:

• Applications with one or two strong letters of recommendation from academic or professional referees who can demonstrate your potential for success in a research-based program.
• Applicants who have already gained some research experience, e.g., through a research-based degree program, previous research internships, or other relevant research experience.

Application Form

The application form includes:

• your personal details, education and work history
  your qualifications, experience and skills
• any relevant certificates or transcripts you hold
• your research interests in SmallData
• your letter of motivation
• your personal statement outlining to which extent you would benefit from SMART’s qualification program
• your ranked list of up to three preferred research projects and corresponding supervisors
• contact details of up to two referees providing letters of recommendation

School and University Transcripts:

Attached certificates that are neither in English nor German must be translated into one of these two languages. Unofficial translations are allowed for the application. For admission into SmallData and for registration as a doctoral researcher, officially certified translations will be required.

Letters of recommendation:

In the application form, you have the option to provide the contact information of up to two referees. Please let the referees know that they will receive an email request to submit their recommendation online once you have submitted the application form. We only accept online recommendations through the application system; recommendations submitted by mail or email cannot be accepted. Letters of recommendation should be submitted through the system by the application deadline. You may want to remind your referees of the deadline. Recommendations should be written by people who have mentored you in an academic or professional context. Your recommendations should relate directly to your suitability for admission to the SmallData research and graduate program.

Selection process

Stage 1:
Application

Submit your data via the application form. After submitting the fully completed form, you will automatically receive a confirmation email.

Stage 2:
Review process

Applications are reviewed independently by the selected principal investigators of SmallData on an ongoing basis as they are received.

Stage 3:
Video interview

For further assessment you may be invited by any of the selected principal investigators to attend a video interview.

Stage 4:
Personal interview

If suitably qualified, you will be invited to an on-site interview with the selected principal investigators and further members of SmallData, where you will give a short presentation of your previous research work (e.g., MSc thesis) in English.
