Job Description Summary
A postdoctoral position is available at Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) to conduct research on biomaterial and tissue engineering. The appointment is for 12 months, with an option for renewal upon satisfactory performance and funding availability.
Successful applicants would join a team of graduate and undergraduate students advised by Dr. Muhammad Rizwan, Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering. The applicant would select specific research topic(s) working with the supervisor in the area of hydrogel-based biomaterials and tissue engineering.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
1. Perform biomaterial synthesis, cell culture experiments, and characterization of cells and biomaterials
2. Analyze and evaluate research data and provide interpretations requiring significant knowledge of a specialized area of research
3. Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and assist in grant proposals
4. Disseminate research at national and international conferences
5. Work with other members of the research team, including undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and research collaborators
6. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work
Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)
Ph.D. in biomedical / materials engineering, or in a closely related field. Degree must have been earned within the last six years.
Required Experience (minimum requirements)
Experience in fabrication and characterization of biomaterials
Desirable Education and/or Experience
Experience in organic synthesis and developing new hydrogel materials
Experience in 3D cell encapsulation in hydrogels
Experience in the characterization of cell-matrix interactions
Experience in in-vivo transplantation of biomaterials
Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)
A strong record of publication(s) in mainstream peer-reviewed journals in the area of biomaterials and tissue engineering
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
Research expertise in one or more of the following is preferred –
• Mammalian cell culture
• Synthesis and characterization of Hydrogel biomaterials
• Cell and molecular biology techniques
• In-vivo transplantation of biomaterials and cells
Language, Mathematics and/or Reasoning Skills
Work Environment and/or Physical Demands
The work environment is that of a typical office and/or classroom setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
