Scholarship amount:
€19,000 per year (before social contributions) for up to 4 years, provided in monthly installments (increased by a maximum of 50% for previously authorized research stays abroad; the extra funding is provided for no more than 12 installments) + research budget (10% of the yearly amount of the scholarship in the first year, 20% of the yearly amount of the scholarship in the three following years)
The Scuola Superiore Meridionale (SSM) – School for Advanced Studies – is an Italian interdisciplinary higher education and research institute, with a strong international outlook. The SSM only admits graduate students selected through a competitive exam, and runs ten Doctoral Programs in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Theoretical and Applied Sciences and Technology.
For the academic year 2023-2024, the SSM invites applications for no less than 80 fully-funded scholarships (mostly funded by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, part of the Next Generation EU program) in the following Doctoral Programs, all of which are led by panels of experts in their field:

For each program, the SSM offers eight fully funded scholarships of EUR 19,000 per year. All Doctoral Programs are 4 years long (1 year of coursework followed by a 3-year research project in the area of choice).
A five-year university degree, equivalent to a Master’s qualification, is required to participate in the selection. Admission to each Doctoral program is premised on a competitive assessment of each candidate’s qualifications; shortlisted candidates are interviewed in the first half of September, as detailed in the Call for Applications available here.
