The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH) is a world-leading institute in global health with a particular focus on low- and middle-income countries. Associated with the University of Basel, Swiss TPH combines research, education and services at local, national and international levels. 900 people from 80 nations work at Swiss TPH focusing on infectious and non-communicable diseases, environment, society and health as well as health systems and interventions.
Within the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH), our Unit “Environmental Exposures and Health” (EEH) is focused on research related to the many environmental exposures: including air pollution, noise, airborne pollen, heatwaves, green space and electromagnetic fields.
We are looking for a PhD candidate in epidemiology (80-100%).
Your position
The PhD will focus on cognitive performance, behavior and symptoms in an on-going epidemiological study on the health effects of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) in adolescents. For this prospective epidemiological cohort study, we are currently recruiting 900 adolescents from 7th and 8th grade in Northwest and Central Switzerland with one year of follow-up. In a nested measurement study, objective sleep and personal RF-EMF exposure data is collected during one week.
You will work in a multidisciplinary team of several students and collaborators within Swiss TPH.
Together with the team, you will contribute to data collection including school visits.
For the PhD thesis, you will conduct data management and data analysis, write scientific papers and present your results at national and international scientific meetings.
Your work is part of an European consortium of similar children and adolescent cohort studies (GOLIAT: 5G expOsure, causaL effects, and rIsk perception through citizen engAgemenT).
For complimentary advanced education you will have the opportunity to register in the PhD program in Epidemiology/Public Health of the University of Basel and the Graduate Campus of the Swiss School of Public Health (SSPH+).
This PhD enables you to collect practical experiences in all aspects of complex epidemiological research.
Your profile
Master degree level in epidemiology, natural science, data science, statistics, informatics, geography, or a similar field of quantitative/empirical studies.
Excellent English language skills (speaking and writing). German language skills is considered a strong asset for this position but not a requirement.
Good knowledge of programming, data management methods, and quantitative analytical methods (preferably R or Stata) or a strong interest in developing such skills.
Strong spirit of team work.
Ability to work independently and flexibly using your good organizational skills.
Broad interest in environment and health research and ambition to contribute to scientific progress as well as to performing societal relevant research.
